How do I select the right tour? Cycling tours vs Multi-Adventure tours explained.

Since launching our new Multi-Adventure Tours for 2026, we’ve received amazing interest and lots of questions from guests who have already joined us on our Italian cycling tours over the years, and also from new prospective guests who have never joined us on tour before, but are wanting to learn more.

Most of the questions we’ve received centre around 3 main themes:

  1. How does an A’QTO cycling tour differ from a multi-adventure tour?
  2. How do I select a cycling tour vs an adventure tour? Which is right for me / us?
  3. Can you help me choose the best activities to personalise my adventure on tour?

So here we answer these questions.

However, before we answer each question specifically, we thought we’d share what an ‘adventure tour’ means to us, and the inspiration behind how we’ve designed our tours.

What does a Multi-Adventure Tour mean to us? Our Inspiration.

For us, a multi- adventure tour means being able to experience the natural beauty and culture of Italy, and specifically the places we’ve selected being Sardinia and the Cilento Coast, from multiple perspectives, and with the option of a multi-sport experience.

We have always said when developing a cycling tour, how do we create the perfect day? The same inspiration applies for how we have designed our multi adventure tours.

For us, the perfect day involves engaging in an activity you love, having space to relax and slow down, taking a late afternoon stroll through a historic town or participating in a cooking or art experience, and then enjoying an evening of cultural immersion with amazing local food, wine and conversation – amongst friends and with locals.

This is what we call ‘the new luxury’ – enjoying an authentic experience that connects you to places and people in a real and meaningful way, while engaging in the activities you love.

How does a Cycling tour differ from a Multi-Adventure tour? Which is right for me / us?

Our cycling tours are for experienced riders and their non riding partners.

As a rider on our cycling tours, you get to explore a great deal of the Italian countryside, meandering into villages, over rock strewn hills and along coastal roads with the most inviting, brilliant blue shimmering waters. As a non-riding partner, you enjoy an immersive daily program of cultural experiences, hikes in nature, and learning from and interacting with locals, whether they be producers, artisans or cultural guides.

Ultimately, our cycling tour programs are designed for cyclists who just want to do what they love, and that’s ride and be challenged every day in the mountains, hills and incredible landscapes of Italy, and to be able to share the experience with their non-riding partners, should they choose.  It has been a winning formula for almost 10 years, with our tours leaving guests with unforgettable memories – you can check out our testimonials here.

Our multi-adventure tours have been designed with a broader audience in mind, and with an expanded set of physical activities to engage in every day.

  • For cyclists who love to ride, but who also enjoy other sporting activities

What a multi- adventure tour gives a cyclist who also wants to enjoy other activities, is the opportunity to be on and in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, rather than just riding alongside it, and the chance to enjoy one or more of the many small hiking paths that you pass on a ride and are curious about, but never have the chance to explore where they lead. Our multi-adventure tours allow you explore in a different way the natural and stunning landscapes of the Italian regions we’ve selected, and also take the time to immerse in cultural experiences that have traditionally been the domain of our non-riding partner program on our cycling tours.

  • For active adventurers who love to experience a place by bike, on foot, and in water

Many guests join us on tour who are fit, active, determined and who just love to enjoy a place from a range of perspectives, speeds and modalities. Our multi-adventure tours are perfect for people who enjoy a multi-active challenge – perhaps a 50-70km bike ride one day, a 10-15km kayak experience the next day and a 10-15km hike the day after that – all while enjoying a range of cultural experiences and immersive activities.

  • For active couples, families and friends who want to enjoy an active holiday together, but who are at different levels or have different interests

Over 10 years of running cycling tours, we have had many couples, families and friends join us who fit this category and we’ve never quite been able to deliver the ideal program for them – now we can….and we’re excited to do that!

How do you choose between a Multi-Adventure and a Cycling Tour?

We think that the best way to decide which type of tour is best for you, is to ask yourself the following questions and choose the tour type accordingly:

Choose a CYCLING TOUR if you answer YES to the following statements:

  1. I’m a cyclist and all I want to do is ride every day. I want a serious cycling challenge;
  2. My partner or my buddy and I both ride, and while we might be at different levels, we want to ride each day and know we will be supported on the ride;
  3. I’m a cyclist and all I want to do is ride every day, but I’d love to share the experience with my partner, who enjoys cultural activities more than physically active adventures.

Choose a MULTI-ADVENTURE TOUR if you answer yes to the following statements:

  1. I am a cyclist and I want a riding challenge, but I also love water sports, and I enjoy a hike or two. I enjoy diverse activities;
  2. I am active and love to ride, hike, kayak and SUP. I love the outdoors and being immersed in nature, and I want to experience it all;
  3. My partner and I both enjoy being active every day. I love to ride a little more than they do, they love to hike, and we both love being immersed and active in the incredible Mediterranean Sea

In summary, our cycling tours offer a fairly set program for cyclists and non-riding partners.  For a rider, it’s an amazing day on the bike, every day. For a non-riding partner, it’s all about culturally immersive activities and some hiking. The programs run in parallel and we come together each late afternoon to share time out and our evenings together as a group.

However, on a multi-adventure tours, there are a broader range of ‘active’ options and you can ‘choose your own adventure’ each day (and of course we can help recommend the right program for you). We enjoy cultural experiences together as a group during the days and also in the evenings, and riders get to enjoy more ‘off the bike’ activities than they might perhaps enjoy on our cycling tours.
